Krishna Janmastami – Krishna’s Birthday

Lord Krishna is one of the most romantic gods in Hindu mythology. He was raised in a cow herder community in ancient times and is told to have 1,600 girlfriends, Gopini. Among them Radha was his beloved one. Krishna is believed to the human incarnation of the God Bishnu.


On the birthday of Krishna, Krishna Janmashtami numerous devotees flock to the ancient Krishna temple in old Patan Durbar Square to welcome Lord Krishna’s birth. Men and women chant "Narayan Narayan" and "Gopal  Gopal".

This year’s Krishna Janmasthami was on September 1, 2010. As the Eastern lunar calendar is different from the Western solar calendar the exact date of such festivals can only be determined by astrological calculations.
